Secretary of State Reflects on Three Decades of Economic Transformation in Northern Ireland
In an article for the latest Ulster Business magazine on Ulster Business Top 100 2025, the Secretary of State reflects on the economic growth in Northern Ireland since the Good Friday Agreement, nearly 30 years ago. Hilary Benn MP, who has been in office for a year, highlights the transformation of the region from a place of conflict to a thriving economy. He emphasizes that political stability has not only benefited the people but also spurred significant business growth in sectors like aerospace, life sciences, and film and television. Benn attributes this success to constructive work by the Northern Ireland Executive and substantial financial support from the UK Government, including a record £19.3 billion settlement.
Furthermore, he points to a £1.6 billion deal with Thales in Belfast for missile manufacturing, which will create 200 new jobs and support 700 existing ones. Additional funding for research, skills, and regional development through City and Growth Deals is also detailed. Benn concludes by expressing confidence that Northern Ireland’s economy will continue to flourish as a vital part of the UK, supported by new industrial and trade strategies and the Windsor Framework.
